I was browsing through The Ultimate Smoothie Book for inspiration when I realized that I almost never read the introductory pages. After today, I’m reading EVERY page that comes before the recipes in a cookbook.
I wish I had known about this sooner (and glad there was no one to record an episode of “Me, The Hammer, The Drill, and The Coconut”.
Here’s author Cherie Calbom’s method for opening coconuts:
Pierce the softest eye on a coconut shell with a knife or ice pick. Drain the liquid into a bowl or container. Place the coconut in a 375 degree F oven for five to ten minutes, then remove it and tap it forcefully with a hammer. This will both break the shell apart and loosen the flesh from the shell.
And when you’re done, you can go on a Date with a Coconut or stay home and enjoy a Coconut Mint Smoothie instead.
